Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Attention

Multiple slow drains, gurgling sounds, sewage odors, and soggy yard patches can all point to a sewer line problem in your East Bay home.

The classic warning signs of a sewer line problem are multiple drains slowing or backing up at once, gurgling sounds from toilets or drains, sewage odors, and soggy or unusually green patches in the yard. Any of these deserves a prompt look.

Warning signs inside the house

One slow drain is usually a local clog. Several slow drains at once — especially the lowest fixtures in the home — point toward the main sewer line. Gurgling from a toilet when a sink drains is another classic sign.

Sewage odors inside the home, or water appearing around a floor drain, should never be ignored.

Warning signs in the yard

A soggy patch of lawn, an area of grass that is suddenly much greener, or a persistent odor outside can mean the sewer lateral is leaking underground.

Many East Bay sewer laterals are decades old. Age, ground movement in our earthquake-prone region, and tree roots all take a toll over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sewer backup an emergency?

Yes. Sewage backing up into the home is a health hazard and should be treated as an emergency.

Can tree roots really break a sewer line?

Yes. Roots enter through small joints and cracks, then grow and widen them — a very common problem in older East Bay neighborhoods.
